What can networking do for you….really??

(Originally posted: 3/30/10)

If you put your “real” self into networking you can gain enormous rewards. Almost everything we do in life involves networking of some sort. One of my biggest clients came from a referral from a friend and hairstylist who I had know for over 10 years. I never thought of my interactions with my friend as networking. I am genuinely interested in her and her life, dreams, desires, needs, wants, etc. I am present in my relationship with her and she with me and that’s why when she heard a need for a CPA, I was the most logical choice to her.

Networking is getting to know other people – it’s just that simple but, of course, since it’s a people activity we’ve set-up groups and made up rules and guidelines. No matter where you are “networking” if you keep in mind that you are simply meeting other people it certainly makes the whole experience more of an adventure and possibly even fun. Organized networking groups can make building alliances with business neighbors much easier and quicker than going door-to-door. In WBB, I can honestly say that we have fun every meeting. We get to know each other well by meeting weekly and form such a nice camaraderie. Change is such a constant in our modern world that it is a comfort to meet with a group of people who know you well on a weekly basis.

I’ve met so many wonderful people through networking and gained knowledge and insight. I love people’s stories and weekly group networking is the ticket. I have a good friend and business colleague who I try to get together with on a regular basis, our goal is every other week or so. Guess what?? We rarely make that schedule and we love to share time together. Life gets in the way. With my WBB meeting I have made a commitment to be there each week or to send a substitute. Do I make every week? NO but I try and so do all of the other members and it matters.

So what can networking do for you, really?? Personally my first West Coast client was met at my first group networking meeting after moving to Eugene. A good friend of mine met a great friend at a networking meeting who then introduced her to her brother who she married! A grandmother I know now has an adopted granddaughter through networking. Her grandchildren are on another coast and her networking friends parents and her daughter grandparents are on the other coast too.

The possibilities of networking are only limited to your imagination! Ready, Set, Network!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why Network??????

At the beginning of our weekly WBB meetings one of us talks briefly about the purpose of WBB and the network that it provides. Usually it starts with why the speaker gets up at 5ish am to meet with all of us at 7am and how very worthwhile it is. So what are the benefits of WBB and well, networking in general?

One reason is even if you are the person who knows everyone, do you really know “everyone?” No. But as you meet and form connections with more people through networking your own network will grow exponentially. This is because each person you meet and form an alliance with has an average of 250 people that they know.

Now for these people to refer or introduce you to “their people” they have to trust you and that is where WBB comes in perfectly. We meet every week and support each other. We really get to know each other through the weekly meetings, coffee/tea meetings, special events that we plan though out the year and also through the leadership roles that we fill within WBB.

Is it possible to make these types of connections without WBB? Of course, but WBB provides a weekly time that all the members have committed to sharing together their desire and energy to grow each others’ business. Undertaking that without the support of the group tires me just thinking about it. Anyway, come check us out. We would love to network with you!

Crawl before you walk; Walk before you run; and plan before you do either!

Plan to succeed. It is said that most small businesses close because of cash flow but I believe lack of planning is the real culprit. Before you even start your business do your research. Use Business Plan Pro or a similar program to complete a business plan. Visit a SCORE office or your local community college’s business development office for help with your business plan and to attend workshops and classes to learn everything you can about being a business owner.

Educate yourself about every aspect of your proposed business. Who is your customer, competitor, vendors, trainers, etc? A good business plan will help you realize these and many other aspects of your proposed business. One of the best ways to learn about writing a business plan is to study the plans of established businesses in your industry.

Make sure that your numbers really add up and make sense. If you’re not a numbers person this is an excellent time to invest in the services of someone who is – a CPA is an excellent choice. Think through and document every process in your business. This step will help to ensure that you’re not missing any expenses.

Find a business mentor. Preferably someone in the same business that can help guide you along the way. If you’re thinking; why would someone want to help me? My only answer is that people love to help others and share what they know.

And most importantly do something you are passionate about. Good Luck!

My first blog post….ever!

Please come, read, enjoy a cup of tea and maybe share some ideas. I will be updating my blog on a regular basis (that’s the plan, anyway.) I hope to share information that is of interest to business owners, would be business owners and most taxpayers. It will be a work in progress; never finished, probably not perfect but certainly approached with humility and the need to serve.
